The protagonist, John Cartwright, is on a cruise with his wife when they're robbed at gunpoint. That night, he teleports with his family back home by shifting through different dimensions. He goes back on the ship and after realizing his experience was all a dream, he's punched in the face by one of the robbers who got away.

The narrator does a great job of conveying the different characters and emotions throughout the book. This highlights an interesting portion of history that many people are not familiar with.
