She stops her execution at the eleventh hour by professing her innocence, but the jailor is skeptical. The jailor knows that if someone were to die from arsenic poisoning, evidence would be found throughout their house; but so far, nothing. The jailor believes that this only proves that Nell was trying to kill her husband out of fear that he might discover where she got the money that he paid her because she couldn't work and support them both.
