David Rintoul, a British intelligence officer, is tasked with trying to find out the identity of a spy who was planted on the inside at MI6. The novel is neither too long nor too short, conveying a sense of urgency while maintaining the narrative's pace. The narrator did an excellent job of distinguishing between characters and creating tension in different scenes. In addition, the narrator did such a good job with his voices that you are able to distinguish between British accents and Americans despite not knowing what accent he used for each speaker.

The spy must infiltrate this organization and find the list before he is caught by them. One problem, the spy's cover gets blown during his first mission and he becomes a wanted man- hunted by every other member of these highly skilled organizations.

In this novel, author Robert Harris tells the story of a young American intelligence agent's rise through the ranks of British Secret Service. Alec Leamas is a typical spy, who goes on to become head of F Branch, the special operations arm of British Intelligence. As one of his first tasks as head of F Branch, he is sent to East Berlin in 1948 to spy on a potential defector from East German intelligence. Eventually, he learns that not only is this man innocent and betrayed by his own government, but it was actually the Communists themselves who wanted him discredited because they had information that he supposedly gave to Western intelligence services years ago about some secret weapons being developed by East Germany for use against the Soviet Union.

Russell Drysdale is a British businessman living in Germany with his wife and two sons, when he's approached by the British intelligence agency MI6. His office is bugged, and they need him to help them stop a group of Russian terrorists who have hijacked an airplane. He agrees on the condition that he can hire a lawyer, but quickly realizes that the terms of their agreement are almost impossible to fulfill; they'll need to work together as spies.
