An Observant Wife: A Novel Free Audiobook Download by Naomi Ragen
When you are a Jewish woman married to a Jewish man and raise Jewish children, your life is hard. You have to constantly fight against assimilation and the non-Jewish world. Being observant means sticking to rules that other Jews may not agree with, but it also means that you have more options for personal happiness because you're able to keep company with people who share the same beliefs as you. Naomi Ragen's new novel tells the story of how one family manages to maintain their observance in the face of various conflicts.
We are introduced to the novel's protagonist, a newlywed wife named Miriam who is obsessively in love with her husband. She has an overactive imagination and enjoys reading about different scenarios that play out in her mind. All of this changes when she has a traumatic car accident that leads her to realize she is so lonely and the marriage is not what she thought it would be.
"An Observant Wife" is regarded as a classic of Jewish American Literature. It tells the story of a young Jewish woman, Ruth Feldstein, who is married to a man, Aaron, who wants to teach her what it means to observe Judaism in America. He begins with not taking her out on Friday nights because she is one day late turning 19 years old and trying to get her accustomed to life away from home.
"An Observant Wife is a truly relatable book. It's set in the early 20th century when wives were expected to be subservient and invisible," Zackman said. "The author, Naomi Ragen, has cleverly infused her protagonist's voice with her own at times, making it feel like you're in the mind of this woman. She also mixes up different accents so that the reader can see what she sees - Jewish women on Park Avenue or ladies in Texas or even Russian ladies living in Latvia."
