Aimee Bender's new novel, An Invisible Sign of My Own, reads like a science-fiction story. It is set in 2045 and follows the life of an elderly woman on her death bed at an assisted living facility who is slowly dying from cancer. Aimee Bender is a woman who, in her mid-thirties, finally manages to publish her first novel. The book was sold and soon it was announced that the author had been accepted for a prestigious writers' residency in Indonesia. Not wanting to be away from her two young children for too long, she offers to look after their dog instead of going there herself. The family agree and the dog becomes invisible as his owner takes over and starts looking after him.
