As society breaks down, the last survivors retreat to a medieval-like village where they take up farming and living off the land. They are unwittingly drawn into a conflict with nearby aliens who have their own problems that lead to tragedy on both sides. The story centers around an old man named John Darrow who has been trying to return home for years with no luck. When he finally does make it back, he realizes that what he left behind is no longer there.
