"Holly has been content, ever since she left the Star and Sixpence, for quite a long time. She's been teaching school and helping people who're in need, running her own business and enjoying a busy social life. But when her aunt dies, Holly is forced to return home to settle her estate and face the ghosts of past mistakes."

It is 1898, and year-old Holly Hepburn has been told that she is going to be working at the Star and Sixpence pub in London. Holly's father was once its proprietor but now runs a neighboring pub, making Holly work for her keep. She meets many people during a year of service, including the customers and her fellow workers. Among them is Mr. George Simpson, who asks Holly to marry him after she becomes pregnant with his son, Harry.

A Year at the Star and Sixpence is a vivid story set in the English village of Widdington during the summer of 1884. The author, Holly Hepburn, takes readers back to an era that was fraught with change and saw women's rights as a hotly debated topic. Having been abandoned by her husband, Hannah decides to run away from her grief, but when she arrives at the Star and Sixpence she finds herself unable to leave. Instead, she meets Lucy Carmichael who takes her in as a boarder for the summer. Lucy helps Hannah out of her hole of despair and into living life again although not without its own fair share of struggles.

As I began listening to the audiobook, I was enthralled by the story and its characters. Their struggles to survive in a harsh and unforgiving world kept me captivated until the very end, when I cried at how beautifully Holly had been able to paint her characters.
