A Visit from the Goon Squad is a novel about the rise and fall of The System, a multi-billion dollar media conglomerate that is no longer at the top of its game. A visit from the Goons, an anonymous group of hackers who have turned their attention to The System, causes upheaval and allows people to see how The System operates and reveal how it affects them personally.

The audiobook tells a story of four main characters and their lives as they bounce back and forth in time. It starts off with Sasha, who is coming out of a coma after being shot. She has no memory of what happened to her or anyone else that night. As she begins to push through the fog, she makes connections between the people around her and those in the past.  The audiobook is a long, emotional read about love and loyalty, betrayal, and redemption. It's one of those books where everything happens simultaneously because you're learning about each character individually and then at the same time you're discovering how they all connect.

The story is narrated from a first person perspective by Roxana Ortega, a young Cuban woman living in Miami who's part of a family of Cuban exiles. Her parents have immigrated and worked hard to provide for the family, but they have many issues due to the long years away. The family has fallen into debt and her parents are struggling to keep it together. One day, the bank came asking for their house in order to collect the debt which caused her father his job as a taxi driver which left the entire family struggling.

This audiobook is the perfect addition to any book nerd's summer list. The story takes place in 2009, when the American economy has been crashing and the stock market is tanking. A young woman named Patricia Highsmith travels from New York to Los Angeles to meet with a millionaire who she has been corresponding with online, who she believes will be able to help her save her family's legacy. But what she finds instead is a boy on the internet calling himself "The Angel of Death."
