'A Thousand Ships' is a powerful, intense and explicit novel centred on Rachel, a young woman who lives in London. Rachel purposefully sets out to break free from her family's constraints: she has an affair with an older married man who tries to control her; she cheats on her husband; and she puts herself in dangerous situations, fully aware of what the outcome will be. This gripping novel explores how Rachel's choices affect those around her - her children, friends and mother.

This book is about the First and Second World Wars, and how they changed England. This is a big topic, and so this book isn't always easy to read. In addition, Natalie Haynes reads the audiobook and her accents can get distracting. Nevertheless, I would recommend this book because it's interesting to see how people survived during these wars and what the country looked like afterwards.
