A Thousand Acres is a story of family and the legacy they leave behind. It follows thirteen-year-old Mattie who, after being sent away from her family after her mother's death, struggles to find her place in the world, among people not like herself. Her grandfather teaches her about farming and how to live off the land, respecting all living things. At first it's hard but as she learns more about what it means to be truly free and independent, she starts to appreciate the power of being self-sufficient.

'C.J. Critt', the narrator, is a gentle and soothing voice that will put you at ease and help you get lost in the story, which is just what I needed after my long day of work.
