As the story begins, Deborah is married to a successful dentist and has two children of her own. One day, she receives an e-mail from her older sister, Isabelle, who reveals that she is in an abusive relationship. Frightened for her safety, Deborah rushes to Isabelle's home in the Caribbean. But there's no answer when she knocks on the door and eventually gives up. Luckily, Isabelle sends a second e-mail telling Deborah that she safely got away from her husband and doesn't want to be found.

'A Taste of Sage: A Novel' is a book about a gay black activist who is taken out of the closet by his best friend. The novel begins with a young protagonist, Los Angeles resident Zeph, who has recently come to terms with his sexual orientation. Los Angeles is in ruins and Zeph's mother has just been arrested, leaving him with no one but his childhood friend Marcus. He's naive and not really sure how he feels about everything in life, but he's excited to be learning from Marcus. It turns out that their relationship is strained and when Marcus announces that he's going to leave, Zeph moves into the house next door. There, he meets a group of other activists who are crafting their own definitions for success
