"What is it that you want to hear?" "I want to hear your voice. I want to know what's going on in there," "I can't speak. You can't speak either." "Why not? What's the point of this exercise?" As the book opens, old prisoner #24034 is reminiscing about his life in prison. He was convicted of a crime that he says he didn't commit, but served his sentence and now finds himself back at the prison where he got in trouble. He says that "you can't take away what you never had." While talking to new prisoner #87474, old prisoner #24034 tells him how this will be "his" story of prison... until it is no longer because it is being recorded by new prisoner #87474. Francis Roper was a lowly naval storekeeper. He had an unblemished record and was respected by his friends and superiors alike. But one day he went a little too far and committed what could have been a very serious crime. Despite the fact that he was not tried or even suspected of any wrongdoing, he was convicted of embezzlement at his court-martial and imprisoned for three years on the prison hulk HMS Hogue. There, in the grim confines of this desolate prison ship, Francis Roper fell prey to greed, envy, lust and despair so much so that by the time he reached the end of his sentence, he had become cynical and bitter.

After having spent time in prison, Jeffery Archer was released and decided to write a book about his experience. The audiobook is narrated by Jonathan Keeble.

When A Prison Diary I, narrated by Richard Armitage, was released a few months ago, the world of literature and audiobooks were two very interwoven and weaved disciplines. Now they are something else entirely. A Prison Diary II - Purgatory is narrated with such perfection that you feel as if you're right there in the prison cell with him. From the first sentence to the last one, Kara Hannon's performance will make your stomach turn and you'll feel yourself mentally preparing for what's to come.
