A Place Called Freedom is set in London during World War II, following the lives of a talented and gifted Welsh girl named Grace who develops an unlikely friendship with an imprisoned German spy.

It's been twenty years since the publication of A Place Called Freedom, and during that time it has received countless accolades. The book opens in 1966 with a young woman named Anna Leonowens, who works for the British East India Company during its last year of operation. It follows Leonowens as she travels to Siam (modern day Thailand) to teach the children of King Mongkut at the time when Britain is on the final countdown to independence from the Crown.

The novel is set in England during the 1950s in a small, poor village called Garsdon. The area was once a thriving industrial town with a railway station and factories. World War II ended and the factories went bankrupt subsequently many people lost their jobs, including several workers at the foundry where young James Follett, aka Jimmy, had been working as an apprentice. His family's fortunes changed when he realized that he could make money by salvaging scrap metal from the old factories. Jimmy has just been released on probation after spending six years in prison for minor offenses when the story begins. The book tells of Jimmy's life as he grows into adulthood and finally gets a chance to leave behind his poverty-stricken roots and start a new life

Freedom is less of a place and more of a person. The protagonist is trying to escape tyranny, persecution and violence but this book follows all his travels which take the reader to the UK, Iraq, Syria, Thailand, Vietnam and many more places. This is a gripping story that had us on the edge of our seats wondering what will happen next.

A Place Called Freedom is a novel about the assassination of a British Prime Minister, which leads to a revolution. It was deemed necessary for the country to be run by a dictator. The protagonist is one of the men who tried to assassinate the Prime Minister.
