A Meeting at Corvallis is a science fiction novel by S.M. Stirling. The story takes place in a world that has been devastated by global warming and the collapse of civilization, where all humans have been relocated to New Hope, Oregon. It follows the protagonist, Matt Nelson, as he travels from New Hope to Corvallis for his meeting with the city council for Corvallis. As he approaches the city in his flying car prototype he sees an eerie glow that grows stronger and stronger as he nears the city limits. He's shocked when he comes upon a ruined city filled with ashes and rubble which turns out to be Corvallis, destroyed by nuclear war during his absence.
The novel begins as a tie-in between the U.S. and Soviet Union during the Cold War, with Captain Kurt Austin coming to Corvallis to investigate a Russian spy named Vasily Cherenkov. At Corvallis, Austin ends up in the company of "Todd McLaren," who is revealed later to be a government operative.
In the year 2132, two people meet at a restaurant in Corvallis, Oregon. One is a young woman who's just been dumped by her husband and wants to tell her story of how she got into the family business. The other is an old man who has traveled from the future to find out why his planet has gone to ruin. They soon realize that they have much in common and soon become friends before embarking on a dangerous quest together.
"A Meeting at Corvallis" is a science fiction novel written by S. M. Stirling. It is the first book in a trilogy about a future society which has become human-dominated and highly advanced. The narrator of this audiobook, Todd McLaren, is fairly new to narration. His voice is a bit young and inexperienced in the world of audiobooks, but that doesn't take away from his performance. He does a great job of giving each character an individualized voice while still performing the voice work smoothly.
