War is devastating and yet everyone has to fight it in their own way. In her most recent novel, War and Millie McGonigle, author Karen Cushman explores the impact of war on a city and a person living on the outskirts of that city.
War and Millie McGonigle is an amazing story about a girl, who like most girls her age, has a bad habit of being quite the tomboy. Everything changes when she is whisked away to live on an English estate with three other girls that aren't as rough and tumble as she. They end up becoming best friends, but when Millie's father goes off to war and he leaves her in charge of her stepmother, she falls into a life-threatening situation.
Millie McGonigle and her family have seen a lot of hardships; each one more heart breaking and different than the last. They live in a mining town, but when her father falls ill and Millie needs to step up and take over the store, she discovers that running a business is not as easy as it sounds. She tries to use everything she can to make it happen, but things just don't seem to be going her way.
In the War and Millie McGonigle, Karen Cushman paints the difficult life of a young girl who is trying to save her family's farm after her father has passed away. The story is told through Millie's eyes in the first person. She tells about how hard it was living on the farm after her father died as well as what it was like when she met another young boy named Henry.
