The Gormenghast Trilogy, Book 1 is a fantasy novel written by Mervyn Peake. It's about Titus Groan and his life in the monstrous castle of Gormenghast. The story was told from first-person perspective of a young boy named Titus, who grew up without knowing his parents but always felt held inside the walls of Gormenghast. The first book describes the youth of Titus Groan and his tumultuous relationship with Fuschia (another character) as they grow up together in the mysterious, oppressive city. Eventually, he becomes an apprentice to Steerpike to learn how to survive in the World Outside (and escape from Gormenghast).

This audiobook was narrated by Simon Vance, who is a well-known narrator. The experience listeners have with this audiobook will be different than most because of the narrator's voice. This is a modern classic which is loved by many and I read it as a teenager and loved it.

Titus Groan is the first installment in Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast Trilogy. At its heart is Titus, son of a house-major and heir to one of the most powerful houses in the land. The novel starts off with his childhood and youth in Gormenghast castle where he is constantly reminded of his place: he cannot leave without being killed by the crows that loyally protect the estate. It follows him into adulthood as he enters adulthood desperate for power and wanting change.

A gaunt figure, in a black cloak with wide sleeves, walks slowly up the twisting staircase of Titus Groan. The man finds himself in the presence of Titus Groan, the Barons' Chief Butler and a knightly servant in his own right. It is here that we find our narrator's true self: Gormenghast.
