The Spymasters: How the CIA's Directors Shape History and Guard the Future Free Audiobook Download by Chris Whipple
The Spymasters is a book about the history of the CIA, and how the Director of the CIA has shaped history. The book is written as an exclusive interview with former Directors of Central Intelligence, each telling in their own words how they changed America and what they would do differently if they were starting today.
The CIA has a long history of successful intelligence missions and secrecy which has allowed it to outlive many other organizations. The Spymasters contains the secrets of how this longevity was accomplished, why it is still in existence today, and what will happen when the agency is inevitably transformed into something new.
Chris Whipple is a former journalist with Newsweek. He’s dedicated his life to discovering the secrets of history and protecting the future. In this book, he reveals the life and influence of fifteen directors who have been instrumental in shaping both governments and historical events. Some have been more successful than others, but all made their mark on society.
The intelligence community has been a significant part of the United States government since its inception. The CIA is the most well known, but there are many others such as the National Security Agency (NSA), Department of Homeland Security, and FBI. The reality is that it is difficult to understand exactly how the intelligence community operates because it is not transparent. In his recent book, The Spymasters, author Chris Whipple provides readers with an insight into this complex world.
The Spymasters Audiobook tells the story of how four successive directors of Central Intelligence have shaped history and protected the future. The book begins with Colonel William Stephenson and his protege, Allen Dulles. After Stephenson passed away, Dulles took over and oversaw the CIA's covert activities during World War II. His protege, Richard Helms, became director after Dulles retired in 1961. Helms used CIA money to support the opposition parties in many countries around the world during the Cold War. Helms' protege, Admiral Stansfield Turner ran into trouble right away because of his brother-in-law's unauthorized dealings with a foreign government. Turner resigned in protest but was replaced by George H.W. Bush shortly afterwards in 1976. Reagan took over as director after Bush resigned in 1987 and he set up shop at CIA headquarters until he left office in 1989.
One of the most important parts of a spy agency is the director. The director guides the agency's strategic goals, controls resources and protects its secrets. Even though these directors were once anonymous, now each one has a name. This book tells the history of CIA headquarters from its creation in 1947 to 2012 and reveals how some of these directors have shaped America's defense and international policy.
