The Skin I'm In Free Audiobook Download by Sharon Flake
The Skin I'm In is a short story that is a little bit different than what you are used to reading. The narrator, Sisi Aisha Johnson, uses her own life experiences and personal stories to tell the readers about how she came to be black with a white mother and father. It begins as a story of an interracial couple who adopted two children- one who was black and one who was white. It then tells about how the children's lives changed when they moved from an all-white town in Iowa to an all-black town in Mississippi.
The Skin I'm In is a novel about two teenage girls who are trying to find themselves and figure out who they are in the world, despite their flaws. One girl, Mae, is struggling with her weight and wants to change how she looks while the other girl, Cassie, is dealing with her skin color. The difference between when they were born affects both of their lives and how they see themselves.
[The Skin I'm In] is an autobiography of author and poet Sharon Flake, who in the late 1960s became a black transgender woman, at that time a radical concept. The book details her life as a black trans woman of the 1960s through the 1980s and 1990 as she takes on many forms of artistic expression including poetry.
"Sisi Aisha Johnson has taken on the challenge of narrating this book and she is fabulous! I highly recommend this audiobook. It's a diverse, stunning, and interesting story."
'Sisi Aisha Johnson' is an amazing narrator who has a smooth and calming voice that makes this audiobook an enjoyable listen. The author did not give many descriptions of the story, but she still managed to capture my attention with her words. This book is set in Harlem in the late 1980s, so it deals with very complex issues such as HIV/AIDS, racism, and poverty.
"The Skin I'm In" is a story about a girl who has the rare skin disorder called vitiligo. It is the first time in her family that anyone has had this disorder and she is afraid of being different from everyone else. When she starts fifth grade, she gets bullied for her skin, but realizes through the help of one person that she doesn't have to be different because it's not what's on the outside that matters.
