I had never read a book from the perspective of someone that was not typically White. I’ve always loved Julia Quinn’s books and movies, but this book is so much different than the books and movies. Miranda Cheever is the protagonist that you follow for about 602 pages of journal entries which are written when she's a small girl. From hearing her thoughts as an 8-year-old I could see why she became such an interesting character to me. The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever was such a touching and well written story.
Miss Miranda Cheever is a young heiress who has been kept starved and hidden away from society by her guardian since the age of six. After she strikes up a friendship with the dashing Captain Ben Hawke, her life changes overnight. The two engage in a passionate love affair that results in his becoming her husband just months later.
Miss Miranda Cheever is a 19th century spinster who lives in New York City. It is her first job, as she only just graduated from finishing school. She has no family to speak of and no friends, but she is determined to make something of herself. When she meets with one of the most notorious men in America, Mr. Jeremiah Danby--an up-and-coming painter--she finds that he has a lot in common with her and they form an instant friendship.
In the year 1812, Miranda is a young woman living in London. Her parents died when she was a child and her guardian, Lord Vale, had to find a way to support her. When he learned that she was talented at drawing, he decided to put her talent to use. Miranda designs uniforms for the British army but is forced into being employed by one of Lord Vale's friends. She learns about the secret society The Masters of Deception and decides that might be what she wants for herself.
