Their ship, Endurance, was stranded there after an ice shelf collapsed under it, causing a storm that sank their lifeboats. They then had to trek 150 miles before finding refuge on ice floes. The book is narrated by Graeme Malcolm, who does a wonderful job with his character voices, accentuating their identities as British explorers or Irish immigrants. The book starts off in 1914 Scotland with Jack Hudson joining a group of young men going off to explore the Antarctic with Ernest H. Shackleton. Jack Hudson eventually becomes one of the party's members as they prepare for their trip to Antarctica but soon loses hope when he sees how unprepared everyone is for this dangerous journey. But things turn out ok in the end because they get rescued and make it back home alive mostly thanks to an international rescue mission that includes people from many countries save them all quitely in April 1915.
