They're flawed, but perfect for each other; not some of these aspects that add to their charm, but the flaws actually make them believable. Nina West is one of my favorite female leads because she's so tough on the outside and has a big heart on the inside. Her vulnerability makes her so much more human to me than most of these super girls or heroes who seem like they're made out of steel and stone.

The narrator is Avery Reid and she has a soothing voice that fits this novel. The setting is in the small town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, where there is no electricity, running water or law enforcement. The book starts out with Theresa Lincolns and her teenage son escaping from their home because they are starving and have nowhere else to go. They find a family in a van on the side of the road but soon realize that they are being hunted by someone. Theresa's son Jackson is taken by the same person who took their food and they must find him before he dies.
