There is no hunting allowed, but the hunting party makes its way through the dense forest anyway. Suddenly they come across an unknown beast - thin, quick, and vicious - who kills one of their number. The rest of the men scatter in all directions to find safety; some manage to get away while others are eaten alive despite their best efforts.

The Silvan need a new leader, someone who can unite the scattered clans. Mudfoot, the oldest and wisest of the Silvan leaders, knows that he is dying. He sends his son, Whitetail, on a quest to find a new leader among the people of the forest. After almost giving up hope of ever finding another leader, Whitetail comes across a white bear cub--a strange creature with no fear of humans--whose mother was killed by hunters. Together they make their way to an underground den where they are met by the Bear King.
