This is the first in the series of stories that take place in a new sci-fi universe called "The Honorverse". In the story, suddenly a new wormhole opens up and starts spewing out ships from an alternate Earth. At its heart lies a colony planet called "Colonial Union" which is governed by a group of people known as "Colonial Marshals". The opening of this wormhole has turned the world upside down for these descendants of settlers from Europe and Asia who have been living on the Earth for centuries. The story takes place in different time periods exploring how humanity reacts to the threat which has now appeared. This first story also sets up some themes found throughout the series such as honor, duty, leadership, and loyalty
