Port of Shadows: A Chronicle of the Black Company Free Audiobook Download by Glen Cook
In Port of Shadows, the Black Company hops around the world. They're on a mission to find a man and a woman who make soup for an immortal Chinese Emperor. Their goal is to steal his recipe so they can have eternal life--because, as you know, life sucks. It's not that bad when you're with the Black Company because at least they'll get eternal life too. What I loved about this book is that it's so dark and crazy but author Glen Cook has such an awesome way of making everything sound like it makes sense until the end!
The Port of Shadows: A Chronicle of the Black Company is a fictional fantasy novel by American author Glen Cook. It is a military fantasy and an example of swords & sorcery literature. The Black Company, one of seven mercenary companies, was founded in the swamplands north of the ruins of Ankh-Morpork to protect caravans from bandits and ruffians. The first book tells the story of Croaker and Annalist who are members of the Black Company during this time period.
The Black Company is a band of mercenaries and the president hires them to take out a rebel group. They have other plans involving a black powder trade route, but they find that their plans are quickly unraveling. The narration of this book is by Brian Troxell and he does an amazing job in bringing the story to life. It starts off with action from the very beginning, which keeps you engaged throughout the whole book.
This audio book is a thrill ride that will keep you on your toes. You are quickly drawn into the world of the Black Company, which is struggling to survive after a long and bloody war. The action starts right away, but it doesn't stop there. If you've been looking for an epic fantasy audiobook with great characters and compelling action, this might be the one for you.
'Brian Troxell's' narration of 'Port of Shadows' is different from most audiobooks. He does not use a lot of words, but his voice is deep and imbued with purposeful meaning. The pacing is slow, but the reader does not use any filler sounds to keep the audience's attention. This makes for a great ambient experience that entices listeners to take in every detail. 'Brian Troxell' keeps the narration sounding natural throughout and captures both crummy characters and beautiful settings to make something out of nothing.
As a fan of the Black Company novels, I was ecstatic to hear that they have finally been made into audiobooks. Now I can listen to this masterpiece while doing whatever else I need to do.
