On the Banks of Plum Creek is a classic book written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The plot follows a seven-year-old Laura, her five-year old sister Mary and their mother as they move from their home in Wisconsin to a homestead in the Dakota Territory circa 1874.

Marilla and her husband, Almanzo Wilder, decide to buy a farm on Plum Creek. They take their children Marilla and Rose with them, along with their black housekeeper, the family's dog, 'Tommie', and the chickens they had been raising. Their new farm is beautiful, but it is also not very productive. The farmers in the surrounding country are doing more work per piece of land than they are by hand-plowing their fields themselves. Marilla gradually learns how to plow her land too; she also learns how important it is to make use of every source of food - including the critters living in the woods around her property.

On the Banks of Plum Creek is a wonderful book. In this book, a young Laura Ingalls gets to learn what it's like to stay by herself in the country. There are many adventures and exciting moments throughout her time there. My favorite section in the book is when they have to make a raft out of trees to get across a river and run into all kinds of trouble while learning how to use their new skills.

This is a book that recounts Laura's life from the time she was born in Wisconsin to her family leaving for Kansas and then on to homesteading in Missouri. It follows the Ingalls' through hard times and joy, from the death of their first child to the birth of one more who would die in infancy.

On the Banks of Plum Creek, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, is a classic tale told on the banks of Plum Creek in Dakota Territory. This book tells the story of how Laura's family joined the throngs of settlers moving west. The narrator is Cherry Jones and she perfectly captures Laura's voice.
