Oil on Water is the story of a boy named Idris who has grown up in Nigeria. He wants nothing more then to move out of his parents' house and leave the city and live a simple life. Idris decides to go on a journey to see if he can survive in the wild alone, but things don't go as planned when he is shot with a tranquilizer dart by bandits as he is about to cross into Cameroon.

This is a great example of how Helon Habila can keep the reader engaged. He uses witty dialogue and interesting twist to keep you interested until the very end. The story takes place in Lagos, Nigeria as two friends are talking about how they got into what they do for a living when suddenly their oil-soaked boat breaks down.
