The book is about two sisters, Ada and Agnes who move to a beautiful house in the country. One day they go outside and meet a man who claims he can teach them how to swim, but what they find there is a dark secret that leads to their world turning upside down. The plot of the story takes them on an adventure as they learn more about what's going on and try to figure out how to get back home to London.

The book is set in the year 2019 where a devastating world war has left nothing but destruction in its wake. All that remains are landmasses, a few islands, and a handful of people struggling to survive. The story follows a group of survivors that have taken refuge on one such island as they await rescue.

"There is a world beyond the stars, where old men wait with outstretched arms. They know the end of days is near - that ships will sail from all ports and from them will come a weary traveller, shipwrecked and afraid."

Joan Dewar's novel tells the story of a family living on the coast of Scotland. It follows them during the holiday season as they prepare to celebrate Christmas and New Year, while feeling anxious about the future. The book is filled with beautiful descriptions of nature, love and life.

"I am not a modest woman, for I have always considered myself to be more than my body," said Joan Dewar. She was born in 1872 and was the second youngest of 11 children. Joining the Women's Social and Political Union at age 15, she led a campaign to raise awareness about the appalling conditions of poor children during the Victorian era.

Joan Dewar is an educated, intelligent and strong woman. She was a lecturer in English at St Andrews University and she became an expert on the work of Christina Rossetti.
