"I feel like a small bit of me died when I had to go back to my real life, back to the normal boring thing that's sorta okay, but still doesn't compare."
The Forgotten Five were born in 1812 to a woman who could not have children. The woman, Anna, is an amazing healer. When the five are about three years old, a fire destroys their home and kills their mother. Anna found them and took them to live with her at the Salisbury estate in England. They grew up hearing stories from all the people who worked there of how they were part of a small group known as The Five.
Map of Flames is the first book in a new series from Lisa Mcmann. The Forgotten Five were five kids who were training to be fighters of some sort and living in a hidden valley far away from civilization. They were put into stasis for 100 years until they're finally discovered by a curious scientist who goes by the name Dr. Royce Laughlin. He comes out of nowhere and sees them in their prison cell, but it's not enough to stop him from finding out where he can find them again and continuing his secretive experiments with these kids' lives.
The story takes place in the city of New York and following the lives of five people-- Josiah, their boss; Jacob, a reluctant street artist; Delilah, a disillusioned dancer; Lila, a deaf medical student working to save her parents; and finally, Sarah, an insurance agent who's just been fired by her company. The closest they have to family is each other after being abandoned by their parents at such young ages. The children grow up into adults with different struggles of their own and find themselves in unfamiliar territory-- making new friends like Emma and Jai while taking time to help those they believe need it most.
As a young girl, Melody was never allowed to forget that she was different. Never allowed to forget her past and the mistakes of her parents. Five years later, in a city overrun with crime and violence, she is about to uncover the truth about her birthright.
