As in many of Pam Muñoz Ryan's novels, the protagonist is a Mexican-American girl who has two families - one in America and one in Mexico. Her mother goes to live in Mexico when she becomes ill, so Amalia lives with her father and his family in California. In the morning of each day she wakes up speaking Spanish and dreaming of Mexico, but as soon as she steps outside, she speaks English because it is necessary to be understood by most people around her. She is always adjusting herself between these two worlds and between two languages.
