First, I became acquainted with the Germans. They were not bad fellows, but they made me feel uncomfortable because they looked at me when I was within their sight. As a Belgian citizen, I had no right to be there, but the Allies wanted to liberate me and my family, so they put me in a British uniform and allowed me to march with them. The Americans put on some old German uniforms and let me go with them instead of into a POW camp. Finally, when we reached our destination of Auschwitz-Birkenau, there was a big celebration.
The audiobook starts with Eddy in an orphanage and then moves on to his family and how they were deported. He explains his aunt's love for him and how he became a child courier. The book goes through Eddy’s life at Auschwitz-Birkenau including the selection process, how he was in charge of morning coffee and fueling the trucks, but most of all, the people around him that died. He finally tells about how he survived and went home to Belgium.
