The story is told from the perspective of twelve-year-old John Thruxton, and was inspired by true events which took place in 1839 where an escaped convict named William Hare lured five people into his home, then poisoned them before turning himself in to authorities.

The book contains many different identities, which makes it an interesting read. It is narrated by 'Jeffrey Kafer,' who does a great job adding to the suspenseful and intriguing tone of this tale
