Inside Out and Back Again is an autobiographical memoir written by Thanhha Lai. It tells the story of her struggle with depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. The book was published in 2011, and it won the 2012 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.

This beautiful story begins with a Vietnamese refugee, Quyen. She is struggling to build a new life in America. Her husband has abandoned her and the children are doing poorly in school. She spends her days working as a janitor at a factory and trying to raise enough money for a lawyer for her brother's immigration application.

I was engaged in a book discussion group on the internet, and we chose Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai to read together. The first chapter of this book is the most intense in terms of mental illness; it breaks your heart from beginning to end. All through the story, I felt my own symptoms of depression and anxiety coming back. That was when I decided that for my next reading project, I wanted to listen to a book that would be more uplifting and something with a happy ending - Inside Out and Back Again just so happened to fit the bill!

The audiobook is narrated by ['Doan Ly'] and is about a Vietnamese adoptee revisiting Vietnam for the first time after leaving when she was six years old.

He is the boy who grew up fast. With a mom and dad who were crazy busy, he was often alone. His parents rarely saw him as they were too tired. He tried to make friends with his classmates but they didn't seem to want anything to do with him. One day he ran away from home and ended up in a different country on the other side of the world and found himself adopted by a family that loved him.
