Independent Study is narrated by Elizabeth Morton, who has no idea what she's getting into when her mother sends her to a study program at their family home in Rhode Island. Elizabeth is a few weeks away from graduating from high school and will have to start working soon, but her parents want her to take time for herself and figure out who she is before entering the world. On top of studying for tests and being tutored by their private school tutor, Elizabeth also has to work on the farm with their family. However, because of the tough schedule, it's hard for Elizabeth to find time for friends or anything else in her life.

Independent Study is a dystopian novel about a future in which scientists have discovered the existence of a hidden dimension that can only be seen when using their eyes closed. The protagonist, Marlee, has been selected by the society to be one of the first people to explore this new world. In order to ensure that she doesn't get distracted while doing her job, they send her to live with her brother who also works at the lab where he's been assigned to design inventions for use in the hidden dimension. Her brother, Quinn, has had his share of trouble in his life and has since turned introspective and withdrawn from society. They are both struggling with their individual lives as well as trying to maintain contact in order to protect each other from whatever danger might lie ahead.

Independent Study is narrated by Elizabeth Morton. It is a beautifully written and thought provoking story of what it's like to be in a car accident that leads to amnesia. The story follows Fiona, now called Elle, as she tries to relearn what life is while trying to find out who she was in the past. As Elle learns about herself, the reader learns something about her.
