Eric, the protagonist of this novel is a hansom cabby who takes on all sorts of jobs, including driving for Death. The story follows his adventures to protect the soul of an immortal witch. Along the way he meets up with Rincewind and Twoflower, two hapless tourists who are trying to escape from Death himself.
