A century ago, on May 7th, 1915, the Lusitania left New York's Pier 54. Her destination was Liverpool. The Lusitania was called a "floating city" due to her luxury accommodations and features such as electric lighting, movie theaters and a Turkish bath. Over 2,000 people were packed aboard with over one million pounds of munitions and other military supplies intended for Britain in the event of war. Behind her on the dock lay two colliers designed for coal burning which had been converted into armed freighters.

The Lusitania was a passenger ship of the Cunard Line, formerly owned by and named after the 10th Duke of York, who was King George V. On 7 May 1915, she sailed from New York for Liverpool carrying 1,919 passengers and crew. The ship was torpedoed by a German submarine about 100 miles (160 km) off the southern coast of Ireland on her maiden voyage to Britain.

Erik Larson's new book Dead Wake promises to be a vivid and detailed account of on the 1916 sinking of what was arguably the greatest maritime disaster in history: the sinking of Lusitania, the most famous ocean liner yet built. The ship was carrying only 775 passengers and a crew of 1,000 when it was torpedoed by a German U-boat off Ireland's southern coast.

Dead Wake is an exploration of the sinking of the RMS Lusitania, one of the most infamous cases of wartime sabotage. The book opens with the narrator, Erik Larson, explaining the historical context and then he goes into depth about what actually happened on May 7th 1915. He is able to convey a wide range of emotions throughout this work, from anger to sorrow to even cautious optimism for the future.
