When Adrian Tchaikovsky's novel was released in 2005, it was generally well received by critics. It was not until a decade later that its reputation began to grow and gain some momentum. This is largely due to the audiobook release of the title narrated by David Thorpe in 2016.
The story begins with a group of children who are on their way to visit the old man at the top of the hill. One of them, Aza, is a bird catcher and has brought along a cage with three birds in it. They find him; he asks them to free his captive demons, the ones that have taken up residence in his castle. He teaches them some tricks and they make their way home fighting off demons all along the way.

For an audiobook, the narrator David Thorpe does an excellent job of making the reader feel like they are in the same room as Adrian Tchaikovsky. His narration is booming and distinct, telling a story well throughout with a fantastic performance.
