This short novel is about a girl struggling with her weight and depression. The story follows her as she becomes interested in bodybuilding. Bloom & Dark is a uniquely written, bold book with important topics. It is interesting, raw, and at times quite intense.
In the world of book publishing, things can get a little boring. Sure, there's always the next big thing on the horizon: self-publishing, indie publishing, and more. But sometimes you need to take a break from all that and listen to something with your headphones in. In this case, I listened to 'Sierra Kline' read the audiobook for "Bloom & Dark."
Sierra Kline, the narrator of Bloom & Dark does a perfect job with her voice. The story is written from two perspectives; one from a girl named Bloom who is an aspiring artist, and the other from a boy named Dark who is part of a crime family and lives in Naples, Italy. Sierra's voice made me feel like I was Bloom myself as I listened to her experience life through her eyes.
In these days where we have something to be grateful for, it's easy to forget about the bad. And that's what happened to me. I was on the verge of a breakdown and I had no idea how to stop it when my daughter casually mentioned that she had both Hunger Games audiobooks downloaded.
In the audiobook, we are introduced to a young woman by the name of Regina Watts. She was born on the 23rd of February in 1993 and grew up with an abusive father who constantly belittled her for not living up to his expectations. Her self-esteem was never high and she had no friends during her childhood years because she doubted everyone else's opinion about herself. The opening quote is about how "the pain that you carry with you every day doesn't go away when you're finally free from it."
Regina Watts is an L.A. based author who has devoted her life to writing books that are both dark and beautiful, personal and provocative. Her newest book Bloom & Dark is a stunning collection of short stories that explore the darkness in women's lives and the beauty they find during their struggle.
