She's moved in with her Aunt Kate and cousin Kathryn who run the local beach bar on their small island and live life to the fullest. They have no money worries and always have plenty of fun. The conflict arises when Rachel begins to question her place in this tiny world and whether she belongs or not.

A girl named Ashley is looking for a way out of Emerald Isle and into the world. In her search, she meets a mysterious man who says he can help her escape. She's willing to believe anything in hopes of leaving this small town behind.

The book starts off with a car crash and a mother, who has just given birth, bleeding out on the street. The survivor of the crash is a child she's trying to save. The plot then moves forward in time as we learn more about the little girl and her family members. As their story unfolds, many secrets are revealed.

The story is set in a small town on the Emerald Coast of North Carolina, and revolves around three main characters: Ashley, Joy, and Jane. All members of their small tight-knit community, each have their own secrets to keep from the others; but when tragedy strikes, these secrets quickly become too much for them to handle.
