When he is left home alone one day after school, he makes the acquaintance of a stranger who claims to have kidnapped him. Theodore's parents believe the man, Joe Robert Cole, and so does the police department. But Theodore knows better--and convinces them that he's telling the truth. He must work with the wanted lawyer's brother to find her before she is killed and what he learns about the legal system will scare him straight.
