The old woman tells them about a spindle maker, who fell asleep and became a sleeper himself, and the witch, whose husband turned into the spindle because he was angry at his wife for making him into something that didn't make him happy.

The Sleeper and the Spindle is a middle-grade novel written by Neil Gaiman. It is about a young boy named Jack who has to spend the night at his great-uncle's house while his parents go on a date. When Jack arrives, he notices that Uncle Albert's plantation home is covered in dust and cobwebs and is mostly filled with clocks of all shapes, sizes, and styles. Each clock tells its own story: some show clocks inside the house where time has stopped; others show clocks outside the house where time has run out; still others show clocks with hands that struggle against what they see as impossible odds - examples being their hearts beating or flying through space.

The Sleeper and the Spindle is a short story by Neil Gaiman set in the world of Norse mythology. It tells the story of two gods, Ishtar and Narvi, who meet each night to drink from a well. One night, when they are talking about how different everything is over their lifespan, Ishtar reveals to Narvi that her father used to tell her stories about Morwenna, a woman who lived alone in an abandoned house deep in the forest. Morwenna's life changes drastically one day when she happens upon a spindle that has fallen into her home. As she starts using it to spin straw into gold, everyone around her becomes addicted to its beauty and people start coming out of the woodworks asking for more spindles just like hers. However, as time goes on they start wanting things not just made of straw but made out of gold and eventually Morwenna ends up living in poverty and isolation as she can no longer produce anything without magic.
