Now, it's been a little over 50 years since the first James Michener novel was published, but American readers were introduced to the planet of Latin America and its people with this novel. As they journeyed down the river in search of El Dorado, they encountered cultures and societies unlike any they had ever seen. In his classic tale of adventure and exploration, Michener brings readers into a different world that is far from our own. It’s difficult to believe that this story of an epic voyage was written by James Michener in 1964.
A young woman is hiking along a river when she hears a rustle in the bushes and falls into a swollen stream. She miraculously finds herself on the other side of the water, but the sound of flowing water continues to echo in her ear. Suddenly, the sound becomes louder and she comes across an old, abandoned house with a window open. As she peers inside, she suddenly wakes up back at her home and realizes that it was all just a nightmare.
It is a dark, moonless night and the river is flowing hard. In the middle of the night, inching along, bumping against the rocks, and slipping through the banks with a splash of water. The river has forked again, taking a new path to find its way back home.
The River at Night is narrated by Joy Osmanski, and in her voice the listener can hear a sense of realism, but not just any reality. It is one that she shares with her protagonist, Raisa. Joy's interpretation of Raisa feels completely genuine and this makes it easier for the listener to understand the protagonist's thoughts, feelings, insecurities and fears.
