Shadow of Night begins with Harkness' protagonist, scholar and vampire Matthew Clairmont, wondering how the modern world came to be. He scribbles his thoughts into a notebook and wonders about the author's intent. He then travels back to the 18th century in England as he anxiously awaits his lover, Lady Jane Gray. When they finally meet up after she has been away for 10 years, she reveals that he has been a vampire all that time and they enjoy being together until they are parted again.

"Shadow of Night" is a novel about the vampire and witch in the 17th century named Elizabeth and Matthew who are engaged in a battle for Earth's future. Elizabeth, who called herself Lizzie, and Matthew have been lovers for centuries, but now she must go to Hell to save him from damnation. Set in post-WWI London, this paranormal novel is told from the perspective of historian vampire 'Dr. fraction' Eve who experiences the main events through her personal journal.
