Paula is a novel based on the life of Brazilian socialite Paula Cetim, who committed suicide by jumping off the roof of her twenty-second-story Paris apartment in May 1968. The novel was originally intended to be published as a newspaper serial but was turned into a novel when Allende became pregnant. In 1989 it won France's Prix Femina.

In Paula, Isabel Allende's fictionalized story of the Chilean writer Paula, she recounts the tragic life of a woman who makes her way from humble beginnings to a successful publishing career. The novel is set in Chile during the 1973 military coup, when officials threatened to arrest and interrogate Allende's husband-to-be for his socialist sympathies. Throughout this tumultuous time, Paula is faced with difficult decisions that ultimately impact her personal relationships, as well as her work as a journalist.

In Paula, Isabel Allende, the author of The House of the Spirits and most recently an Oprah Book Club selection, has created a character who is both real and impossible to define. This audiobook, narrated by Isabel Allende herself, is available in Spanish, English or Chinese.
