It all starts when they experience a tragic accident involving their teenage daughter, who falls through the floor of her bedroom. When she wakes up, she can't speak, write or read. What's worse is that her parents are told by doctors that if they want to save their daughter, they must move away from Mexico, where everything would be so much harder for her recovery.

The novel is the first installment in a trilogy which tells the story of two women, one ancient and one modern. In a world just after the Spanish conquest, these women have been matched as brides for men who live on an island surrounded by salt water. As part of their marriage contracts, they must stay within certain boundaries defined by these men. One woman keeps to her duties while living as a peasant until her husband dies and she becomes mad from grief and guilt. The second finds herself in an arranged marriage with a shrewd businessman who will make her his lifelong slave if she fails to obey him.

The author of this novel is a well-known voice in the Spanish language. She has written and published several books, which have been translated into French, Italian, German, and English.
