Motherland is a tragicomic family story set in the Europe of the early 20th century. The novel centers on Anna, who has had a hard time adjusting to life before and after her marriage, and her son Viktor. Viktor, newly arrived in Berlin from Russia, wants nothing more than to live up to the potential of his name and become a great painter. However, he has other ideas when he meets a mystical woman named Vasilisa at an artist's colony and falls prey to her wiles.

Maria Hummel’s novel Motherland is a powerful and engaging story that spans four generations of one family. Following the narrator and protagonist, a woman named Rachel who goes on to become a mother, the story follows all four members of her family in turn, showing the various ways they cope with what they experience as life’s disappointments. The book begins with Rachel witnessing her mother’s suicide. Throughout the novel, readers are exposed to both their happy and sad moments in addition to their inner thoughts, emotions, regrets and dreams.

It was written in Germany in 1836 and follows young Nora, an orphaned girl from the future who is searching for her mother, brought to the past with the aid of a secret serum created by a mad scientist.

Motherland is a short read about the return of a prodigal son to the USSR's motherland. It follows the protagonist on his journey from America back to his Russian homeland, full of adversity and struggle as he makes his way across the country.
