The novel follows protagonist Emmet Cole, who has led a comfortable life as the physician of an inner city block in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He realizes that he would be happiest if he could have a chance at a different life and leave the medical profession behind. His hope is that his grandmother will take him in so he can start over without having to worry about money.
