The story begins with Alaric, a Goth, who desires revenge for the death of his father and brother at the hands of Roman soldiers. Alaric the Goth is a novella that tells the story of a Goth, a member of the Gothic people who ruled Rome until they were massacred in 410 AD. Alaric is an outsider looking in on Roman society and has a unique perspective. The book includes many footnotes and sources which give more information about Alaric, his family, and what happened to Rome.
Alaric the Goth: An Outsider's History of the Fall of Rome was a book that I found very interesting. It tells the history from an outsider perspective and talks about how he feels that Christianity was mostly responsible for Rome's downfall. The author is an Irish Goth and has written many other books as well.
Alaric the Goth is an audiobook by Douglas Boin that tells how Rome fell after the death of its emperor Theodosius and how Alaric eventually became a king of the Goths. After Rome falls, he tells of how people start to revolt and gradually become more independent with their lives. People from all over Europe come to seek refuge in Rome, and this leads to social unrest. There are also many wars and battles with neighboring tribes and empires.
The Goths were a nomadic people and did not have the same concerns as the Romans. Alaric the Goth was born in 382 and around this time, Rome began to run into some serious trouble. The Goths had always been an independent people who enjoyed their freedom and didn't want to be ruled by brave leaders such as Theodoric. Alaric's father died while he was still young and the Goth left his family to live with other nomads so that they would not be taken away from him. Alaric spent these years learning all he could about leadership, war, and warfare before he eventually lost interest in life after having seen many friends die around him. He joined one of his childhood friends as a soldier when he reached adulthood and soon changed lives for everyone who followed him.
